Lengthy wait times and steep costs for Schengen visas are prompting many UAE residents to abandon their European holiday plans in favor of destinations with simpler entry requirements.
Despite Europe’s enduring popularity, some travellers say they’ve been unable to secure visa appointments for months, even after starting the process as early as January. As a result, destinations across Africa and Asia are seeing increased interest this summer.
Frustration Over Appointment Delays
Several UAE residents report waiting months for appointments, with some turning to travel agents who charge between Dh300 and Dh2,500 to secure a slot. Even when successful, some travellers were issued short 15-day visas — a stark contrast to the one-year permits they received in previous years.
VFS Global, which processes Schengen visa applications in the UAE, clarified that it does not control appointment availability or visa validity. These are managed solely by embassies and consulates. The company urged travellers to apply up to six months in advance and warned against paying third parties who promise faster processing.
Travellers Choosing Alternative Destination
Dubai resident Cherry Pachisia, unable to get an appointment despite months of trying, opted for holidays in Turkey and Kenya instead. She refused to pay extra fees to agencies, calling the process “frustrating and messy.”
Similarly, South African teacher P. Anderson, after months of failed attempts, chose Bali over Europe, deciding the money saved could fund more enjoyable travel elsewhere.
Some travellers, however, felt they had no choice but to pay high fees. Marketing professional Ms Ahmed paid Dh2,500 to secure an appointment for Portugal, highlighting the stress and uncertainty in booking through agencies.
Impact on Athletes and Professionals
The delays are affecting not only holidaymakers but also athletes and professionals. Lebanese triathlete Jad, based in Dubai, received only a 15-day visa this year, limiting his competition schedule in Europe. “It’s disheartening,” he said, noting he usually travels multiple times a year for both training and leisure.
Travel agencies report
that delays have persisted for over a year, with some appointment slots already booked through September.
With ongoing uncertainty, many UAE residents are choosing to redirect their travel budgets to destinations where visa access is easier and more predictable.
