Embassy Closure and Relocation of Operations
Norway has temporarily closed its embassy in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, due to worsening security conditions. The decision, announced by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlights growing concerns for the safety of diplomatic staff. According to Schengen.News, the closure will remain in effect until further notice.
During the closure, Norwegian diplomatic operations will be managed from Nairobi, Kenya. Despite the embassy’s shutdown, consular services for South Sudanese citizens will continue.
Statement from Norwegian Authorities
Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide emphasized the security risks in South Sudan, stating:
“The security situation in South Sudan has deteriorated significantly recently. This primarily affects the civilian population in the country, but also has consequences for the safety and freedom of movement of our employees. We have therefore chosen to close the embassy in Juba until further notice.”

Norway Increases Travel Warnings for South Sudan
In addition to shutting its embassy, Norway has intensified its travel advisory for South Sudan. Since 2022, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised against all travel to the country. Given the worsening conditions, Norway has now elevated its advisory to the highest level, urging Norwegian citizens to leave immediately.
New travel advisory issued by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
