Germany has reopened its embassy in Damascus, Syria

March 22, 2025 Europe News

Germany has officially reopened its embassy in Damascus, Syria, after a 13-year closure that began in 2012 due to the Syrian civil war. The reopening was led by Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock during her visit to Damascus. This marks her second visit to Syria since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad in December.

Currently, the embassy operates with a small team and does not provide consular or visa services. These services continue to be handled from Beirut, Lebanon, due to ongoing security concerns. Baerbock emphasized that appointing an ambassador will depend on future political and security developments in Syria. She also highlighted Germany’s interest in stabilizing Syria and supporting its political transition, especially given the significant Syrian refugee population in Germany.

Other European nations have also restored diplomatic ties with Syria. Italy reopened its embassy in Damascus in September 2024, followed by Spain in January 2025. Additionally, the European Union has announced plans to reopen its delegation in Syria, aiming to strengthen ties and support the country’s reconstruction.
